Sometimes, the task taking up the most space in your mind is the one that would take the least time to finish.
You know that little task you’ve been meaning to do for days?
Maybe it’s replying to an email, booking an appointment, returning something to its proper place, sorting through a pile of paperwork, or finally making that phone call.
Every time you remember it, you tell yourself you’ll get to it later.
Today, try something different: do one small task you’ve been unnecessarily putting off.
✅ Choose One Thing and Get It Done
Think about the small task that’s been lingering on your mental to-do list.
Not the biggest project. Not the most complicated responsibility. Just one manageable thing you’ve been avoiding even though you could reasonably take care of it today.
Choose it, then take the first step.
Reply to the message. Put the appointment in your calendar. File the document. Refill the household item you’ve run out of. Make the call you’ve been postponing.
If it takes only a few minutes, see whether you can finish it now.
And if it’s a little more involved, simply begin.
You don’t need to transform your entire day into a productivity marathon.
You just need to stop carrying this one task around in your head.
Why This Tiny Habit Matters
Unfinished tasks can occupy more mental space than we realize.
Even when they’re small, repeatedly remembering them can create a lingering feeling that something still needs our attention.
Taking action can help reduce that mental clutter and give you a sense of progress.
It can also make the next step easier. Once you’ve completed one postponed task, you may feel more prepared to approach another—but you don’t have to.
One completed task is a worthwhile accomplishment on its own.
Remember, procrastination doesn’t always mean you’re lazy. Sometimes you’re tired, overwhelmed, uncertain, or simply distracted. The goal isn’t to criticize yourself for putting something off. It’s to make moving forward feel a little easier.
Make It Easy
Use the five-minute rule.
Choose something you can realistically tackle in five minutes or less, and give it your attention before moving on to something else.
If the task feels bigger than that, break it down.
Instead of “sort out all my paperwork,” try “open the envelope I’ve been avoiding.”
Instead of “organize my entire wardrobe,” try “put away the clean clothes on my chair.”
Instead of “deal with my emails,” try “reply to one important message.”
Make the task small enough that getting started doesn’t feel like another burden.
Then, when you’re finished, acknowledge what you’ve done instead of immediately looking for the next thing you should accomplish.
🌼 “You don’t have to do everything today. Sometimes, progress begins with one thing you’ve finally stopped putting off.”
Choose one lingering task and give yourself the satisfaction of taking care of it today.
