Trade One Unnecessary Obligation for Something That Actually Matters to You
How often do you catch yourself saying, “I should…”?
I should clean this.
I should answer that message.
I should be more productive.
I should be doing something useful right now.
Sometimes, those thoughts point toward things that genuinely need to be done. But other times, they’re simply expectations you’ve placed on yourself without stopping to ask whether they actually matter.
Today, try replacing just one of them.
🌿 Today’s Daily Enhancement
Replace one unnecessary “I should” with something you genuinely want to do.
Think of one thing you’ve been telling yourself you should do today.
Then pause and ask:
“Do I actually need to do this—or do I simply feel like I’m supposed to?”
If it’s genuinely unnecessary, give yourself permission to choose something you actually want instead.
Maybe you keep telling yourself you should spend your evening being productive, but you’d really love to read.
Maybe you think you should clean the house when what you truly need is some quiet time.
Maybe you feel like you should answer every message immediately, but you’d rather take a peaceful walk.
Choose intentionally.
Why This Tiny Habit Matters
The word should can quietly fill our days with expectations.
Some responsibilities are unavoidable, of course. But not every expectation deserves your time, energy, or attention.
Learning to distinguish between what you genuinely need to do and what you simply think you should do can help you make more intentional choices.
It also gives you an opportunity to notice what you actually want.
When was the last time you asked yourself that?
Not “What would be productive?”
Not “What would make everyone else happy?”
Not “What am I supposed to be doing?”
Just:
“What would feel good or meaningful to me right now?”
Make It Easy
You don’t have to abandon your responsibilities or turn every “should” into an excuse to avoid something important.
Instead, start with one unnecessary expectation.
Write down the thought:
“I should ______.”
Then challenge it.
If it’s genuinely important, keep it.
If it isn’t, replace it with:
“I want to ______.”
Maybe the answer is something fun. Maybe it’s something restful. Maybe it’s something creative. Maybe it’s simply doing nothing for a little while.
Give yourself permission to choose deliberately rather than automatically.
🌼 Your Little Reminder
Your life doesn’t have to be built entirely around what you think you should do. Make room for the things you genuinely want, value, and enjoy.
